Overview

"Walking In Your Light" is an original indie folk/Americana song inspired by one of the most famous passages in Christian spiritual literature: St. Augustine of Hippo’s Confessions (Book X, Chapter 27, and Book I, Chapter 1). Built around an unhurried, swaying 6/8 acoustic groove, the song follows the journey of a restless wanderer who spends years chasing beauty in the created world, only to discover that the Divine was waiting inside all along.

The Story & Meaning

In his Confessions, St. Augustine looks back on years of searching in all the wrong places and writes:

"Late have I loved you, beauty so old and so new, late have I loved you! You were within me, and I was in the world outside myself, and there I sought you... You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You flashed, you shone, and you dispelled my blindness. You breathed your fragrance on me; I drew in breath and now I pant for you. I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for you. You touched me, and I burned for your peace." (Book X, Chapter 27)

The song is structured around that exact journey—tracing how God uses our physical senses to shatter our spiritual numbness and draw the wandering heart back inside itself.

The Section-by-Section Journey

  • Verse 1 (The Deaf Wanderer & The Inner Guest): The opening verse sets the scene on a hollow country road, capturing the fundamental human paradox. We turn good, created things into little idols, only to watch their "gold turn to rust." We chase flickering shadows on the wall while remaining completely deaf to God's quiet call. The central tragedy is established right here: God was home inside us the whole time, while we were wandering wild, empty, and distracted outside.
  • The Pre-Chorus (The Friction of Good Things): The trap Augustine fell into wasn't necessarily evil things—it was the beauty of creation itself. When we love the gift more than the Giver, created things end up holding us captive, keeping us far from the One who made them. The pre-chorus builds until that realization breaks open: only divine mercy has the strength to pull us out of our self-made dark.
  • The Chorus (The Restless Heart Finds Its Rest): The chorus hits with the full weight of Augustine's two most famous confessions: "Late have I loved You, Beauty so old and so new" and the iconic opening line of Book I: "Our hearts are restless till they rest in You." It is an explosive declaration of relief. God doesn't wait politely for us to figure it out; He calls, He shouts, He breaks through the dark, and for the first time, the soul can truly breathe.
  • Verse 2 (The Blind Eyes Opened): The second verse shifts the focus from hearing to sight. Distracted by every temporary "shining spark," the narrator lived in a spiritual blur. Then divine grace flashes like lightning, shattering the blindness. Once your eyes are opened to the true Light, the lesser loves that used to consume your attention naturally lose their grip, clearing out the darkness of the mind.
  • The Climax / Bridge (The Feast of Senses & The Touch of Peace):  In three rapid couplets, Augustine’s final three senses take over:
    • Smell: God breathes a heavenly fragrance, and the soul draws it in.
    • Taste: Tasting mercy awakens a hunger and thirst that nothing in this world can satisfy.
    • Touch: God touches the heart directly ("Tetigisti me, et exarsi in pacem tuam"). The soul catches fire, shattering every false desire and burning only for divine peace.

How It Was Made (Behind the Scenes)

  • Idea & Songwriting: The I enjoyed listening to the voice I used in Courage to Bend and wanted to try a folk version of my first song Late Have I Loved You, which I used on two music videos, (one and two). As I listend to the original blues/soul/gospel/house lyrics I realized some adjustments were needed for a solo folk version and rewrote the two verses.
  • Music: The track was arranged in Suno around an Open D tuning (D-A-D-F#-A-D) at an unhurried 76 BPM with a 6/8 compound swing. The instrumentation features a vintage roundneck resonator slide guitar with a metallic cone bite, a percussive thumb-pick slap on the wood, and a driving foot-board tambourine pulse. The vocal delivery is dialed in for an authentic, gritty adolescent chest tone featuring emotional vocal cracks and soaring falsetto breaks that drop into a soft, intimate whisper on the outro.
  • Visuals & Cover Art: Since I have already done two videos for this song I opted to just do a Lyrics Video. Given that its October, a fall scene in New England seemed fitting. Image was created in Nano Banana 2. Video was assembled in Capcut.

Personal Reflection

Nothing really new to share regarding this song; I covered it all in the first two videos. I enjoy working with such a powerful message of love for God and the journey to get there.

[Verse 1] Wandering the hollow roads, Chasing beauty in the dust. Clinging to the things You made, Turning all their gold to rust. Deaf to every quiet call, Charmed by shadows on the wall. You were home inside of me, While I wandered wild and free. [Pre-Chorus] Running from the truth, In the dark I played. All the lovely things You made— Held me so far from You— Still Your mercy pulled me through! [Chorus] Late have I loved You, Beauty so old and so new! Oh, my heart was restless, Till it rested in You! You called, You shouted, You broke through my night! And now I am breathing, Walking in Your light! Walking in Your light. [Verse 2] Drawn away by what was made, Losing track of where You were. Chasing every shining spark, Living in an empty blur. Then You flashed... You shimmered bright! Cut the blindness from my sight! Leaving lesser loves behind, Waking up this darkened mind. [Pre-Chorus] Running from the truth, In the dark I played. All the lovely things You made— Held me so far from You— Still Your mercy pulled me through! [Climax] You breathed a fragrance on the wind, And I drew it in! I tasted mercy on my tongue, Now I hunger and I thirst! You touched me and my soul caught fire— Shattered every false desire! [Chorus] Late have I loved You, Beauty so old and so new! Oh, my heart was restless, Till it rested in You! You called, You shouted, You broke through my night! And now I am breathing, Walking in Your light! [Outro] Beauty so old, Beauty so new, Late, so late, Still You pulled me through. My heart was restless, Till it rested in You. Walking in Your light.
